Learning Approach

Our School

Our School

At My Independent School (MIS) we encourage students to take an active role in their education and greater community. They are given agency and voice, are taught democratic listening skills, compromise and empathy; enabling them to make a positive difference in their world.

We teach the Australian Curriculum through engaging and immersive units and projects. Each unit is designed to give students the chance to apply their knowledge and skills. Our assessment pieces a careful balance of writing, designing, making and creating. Learning experiences work to promote collaboration, cooperation, creativity as well as autonomy and accountability. Our flexible learning spaces offer bean bags, cushions and lounge chairs to relax, read, discuss, learn and study.

We believe that education is not only important for developing the mind, but also for physical and mental well-being. We provide a safe, supportive space that actively promotes inclusion, diversity, mindfulness and gratitude. Our curriculum embeds mental health awareness and works closely with students to ensure they feel happy and supported at school. Due to our small class sizes, teachers develop high expectation, strength-based relationships with all students.

MIS sees itself a part of the community. We make use of the local facilities such as the shopping centre, food outlets, sportsground, aquatic centre and library. We aim to give students experience in the real-world and run numerous excursions throughout the year. We have community members such as the police, fire department and health workers come in to run sessions with students throughout the year.
